General Admissions Application Information

Undergraduate students desiring a special education degree must complete a bachelor's degree in which 13-18 credits of professional education courses (Level II) are required and in which 42-60 credits in special education are required depending on the emphasis chosen. Additional courses should be selected to satisfy University Studies Requirements. Students desiring a second bachelor's degree in special education must complete the professional and special education courses.

All prospective special education students must apply for admission to the Department of Special Education before beginning their upper division coursework. Please complete the following Admissions Application AND submit the required paperwork by October 1st.

Important: In order to complete your application the following items must be turned in to Co Brunner, Room 313, Education Building or postmarked By October 1st.

  • Copy of current transcript (It can be unofficial)
  • Copy of class registration for Fall Semester (It can be included on your unofficial transcript)
  • Copy of your ACT scores (if you do not have a copy, ACT scores can be submitted on a high school transcript)
  • Documentation of your experience with individuals with disabilities, this could include a transcript, letter from employer/supervisor, pay stub, thank you letter, etc. No documentation is needed for those who have a family member with a disability.
  • Copy of writing test results (copy of email)
  • Copy of speech & hearing test results
  • Documentation of CIL Exam (Computer and Information Literacy Exam) (can be on an unofficial transcript)
  • Documentation of SPED Math Test Results (copy of email)
  • Proof of submission of your background check

Important Notes

  • Students will be notified by November 1st regarding admission to the SPED program.
  • Admitted students will be required to complete their professional education classes during the following spring semester.
  • Program Descriptions

    Mild / Moderate

    Prepares teachers to work with students (kindergarten through twelfth grade) with high incidence disabilities such as learning disabilities, behavior and emotional disorders, mild mental retardation, and communication disorders. Typically a resource teacher. Mild/moderate teachers typically teach academic skills.

    Severe

    Prepares teachers to work with students (kindergarten through twelfth grade) with low incidence intellectual and physical disabilities such as severe mental retardation, autism, traumatic and acquired brain injury, and multiple disabilities. Severe teachers typically teach functional and life skills.

    Early Childhood

    Prepares teachers to work with children birth through five years of age with mild to severe disabilities. For young children birth to five, the early childhood teacher typically works in early intervention programs. For young children 3-5, the early childhood teacher teaches in public preschool settings.

    Mild / Moderate and Early Childhood

    Prepares students for licensure in both the mild / moderate area and the early childhood area.

    Severe and Early Childhood

    Prepares for licensure in both severe and the early childhood area.
