Brigham City

Brigham City, Utah

In 1984, the first USU courses were brought to Brigham City via Com-Net, and were taught in the County Courthouse. Later, an 80-year-old home was leased from the school district and classes were offered there and at the local high school. From these humble beginnings, it became clear that there were educational needs in Box Elder County that USU could meet.

In 1991, an increase in enrollment necessitated a move to a larger building. Space was obtained in the old Fred Meyer Mall on 1100 South and remodeled into classrooms, a computer lab and offices. Enrollments again increased to exceed the capacity of the center and in 1996 additional space in the complex was added for a total of 15,000 square feet of classrooms, labs and office space. This expanded facility allowed for six regular classrooms plus four satellite delivery classrooms. A student lounge, conference room and expanded office space made everyone feel like there was plenty of room. Enrollments have increased to fill the facility. Serving over 450 students in the Spring of 2000, planners are again looking for more space in the near future.

The increased in student enrollment convinced Center Administration of the need for social activities and other functions to unite the local studentbody. Since 1998, the Brigham City Branch Campus has had their own Student Senator who meets with the Logan campus ASUSU officers and plans functions for local students. Book Exchange Night, a Student Appreciation BBQ, guest lecturers, and expanded "official" Graduation Ceremonies have all added to the "college" experience of local non-traditional students.

The Brigham City Branch Campus currently offers one associate, seven baccalaureate, and seven mater's degree programs. Several local businesses have actively petitioned for education training. Autoliv, Flying J, Thiokol Corporation and First Security Bank have all requested complete degree programs or specialized computer training. The Brigham City Branch Campus has been instrumental in retraining workers during sizeable layoffs at local businesses and corporations, many of them receiving federal grants for training.

The Brigham City Branch Campus also conducts a large concurrent enrollment program at both Box Elder County high schools. Courses in English, math, computers, and science are offered at the high school by USU approved instructors. The students receive both high school and college credit for these courses. Approximately 200 students each trimester take advantage of this program.
