Undergraduate Financial Assistance

Dept. of Special Education & Rehabilitation (SPER)

The following scholarships are awarded each year to special education undergraduates. Application for the scholarship/tuition waivers begins in December and the scholarship deadline is February 1st for the next academic year. Applications are forwarded to the department who makes selections for tuition waivers and scholarships. For more information and for application forms contact your advisor.

Loans

The Staffard and Perkins loans have teacher forgiveness policies. They are available through the Financial aid office.

Donald F. Kline Scholarship Endowment Fund
This scholarship is for an upper division or graduate student who demonstrates superior academic achievement and has financial need. It was established by the family and friends of Donald F. Kline to assist future generations of special education students. Donald F. Kline served as department head. Recipients are known as Kline Scholars.

Joseph Steven Meyrick Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for a special education major who has a disability or has someone in his/her family with a disability, and also has a financial need. Students applying for this scholarship should address both of these criteria in their "statement of need." It was established in 1990 by Stanley J. and Judith Ann Larsen Meyrick in memory of their late son, Joseph.

Leon G. and Faye Sonne Stucki

Scholarship Endowment Fund
This scholarship was established by the Stucki's to assist future generations of students in the special education department. It is awarded to juniors who have a grade point average of 3.0 or better. A committee selects recipients.

Mathew David Hillyard Scholarship Endowment Fund
This scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Lyle W. Hillyard in honor of their son to help deserving students in special education obtain a college degree. It is a yearly scholarship that is awarded by a committee to full-time juniors or seniors majoring in special education who demonstrate financial need. Recipients must reside in Utah, Idaho, or Wyoming.

Undergraduate Special Education Major Scholarship
Upper class special education majors are eligible for this one-time award. Included in this endowment are donations from faculty and alumni. Besides helping special education students in financial need, funds from this account may also support research, instruction, and special education programs.


College of Education (COE)
Following are scholarships available from the College of Education (Application for sholarships/tuition waivers begins December and the scholarship deadline is February 1st for the next academic year). For more information and for application forms talk to your advisor.

Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program Application
In 1984, the Utah legislature enacted legislation which provides funds in the form of tuition scholarships for students pursuing certification as teachers in areas of shortage as designated by the Utah State Office of Education. In return for aid in the Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program, recipients agree to teach in a Utah public school for a term equal to the combined terms of the Terrel H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan Program.

Criteria for the loan program are:
  • 1) Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

  • 2) Completed 2 semesters (3 quarters) of college coursework as of February 1
  • 3) Been admitted into the teacher education program
  • 4) Have a teaching major in an area of critical shortage as designated by the USOE

Incoming freshman can apply for the program through their high school principal or counselor. Graduate students are ineligible to apply. Applicants must be Utah residents in order to qualify.

Dale & Adele Young Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dale and Adele Young. Recipients should demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, and personal integrity. This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who are full-time students and have been accepted into one of the seven academic departments in the College of Education. All applications for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the department where they are enrolled who can demonstrate the academic potential and financial need of the student.

Ethel Miller Scholarship
This scholarship is designated for a student who is a resident of the Star Valley, Wyoming, area, is a student in the College of Education enrolled in a major leading towards teacher certification, has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and has a financial need to the extent that without financial assistance it may be difficult for the student to complete his/her university program. All applicants for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from their advisor. The letter should be attached to the application when submitted.

Scholarship Endowment Fund
This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who are full-time students and have been accepted into one of the seven academic departments in the College of Education, have junior or senior standing (applies to undergraduate recipients only), demonstrate financial need, and demonstrate academic potential as evidenced by having attained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (undergraduate recipient) or 3.5 (for the graduate recipient). All applications for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the department where they are enrolled who can demonstrate the academic potential and financial need of the student.

College of Education Scholarship
This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who are full-time students who have been accepted into one of the seven academic departments in the College of Education, have junior or senior standing (applies to undergraduate recipients only), and demonstrate financial need. All applications for this scholarship must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the department in which they are enrolled who can demonstrate the academic potential and financial need of the student.
