Mission The Program mission is to promote quality rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities through the education of rehabilitation professionals, provision of rehabilitation continuing education, and conducting research related to rehabilitation.

Program Objectives
  1. To provide rehabilitation counseling students with specific competencies to qualify for employment in hospital industries, private-for-profit organizations, and state/federal rehabilitation agencies
  2. To provide prospective counselors with essential rehabilitation competencies to plan, organize, and deliver quality rehabilitation services to persons with a broad range of disabilities including physical disabilities, cognitive disabilities, and psychiatric disabilities.
  3. To provide a knowledge of the medical, psychological, and vocational principles on which much of the content of rehabilitation is based.
  4. To provide information and learning experiences related to rehabilitation counselor education, such as medical considerations, job placement skills, assessment issues, counseling skills, psychosocial issues, and disability rights advocacy.
  5. To provide knowledge of scientific/research methods and to foster an awareness of the relationship between rehabilitation research and rehabilitation practice.
  6. To provide opportunities for practicum and field-based internships for students. These supervised clinical experiences will provide students with one-on-one clinical experience in providing services to persons with disabilities.
  7. To foster an awareness of the environmental and societal barriers persons with disabilities encounter and to provide knowledge and training in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  8. To Provide students with a knowledge of the laws, policies, and professional ethics of the practice of rehabilitation counseling.
  9. To Provide students with knowledge of culturally relevant rehabilitation practices including an awareness of the effect of an individual's cultural/racial/ethnic/linguistic identity on perception/adaption to disability, help-seeking behaviors, and career choices. Training in methods of providing professional rehabilitation services (such as informed choice, job placement, testing and assessment, and vocational evaluation) in a culturally appropriate way will be provided.
  10. To provide students with a professional orientation to rehabilitation counseling, including training in the skill of professional writing, introduction to the professional literature, and knowledge of the professional code of ethics.

Master's

Master of Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC)
The Rehabilitation Counselor Education (RCE) program offers a complete master's level curriculum to both on- and off-campus students. RCE promotes quality rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities through the education of rehabilitation personnel. It is fully accredited by C.O.R.E. (Council on Rehabilitation Education). The program involves four semesters of study including a practicum and internship. Applicants should have a grade point average of 3.0 for the last 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours of undergraduate work in addition to taking either the Miller Analogies Test or Graduate Record Exam. Application forms may be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies. There is a limited number of Rehabilitation Services Administration scholarships available. USU's master's degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling is ranked 12th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Off-Campus overview

Master's

Master's of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling (National/International) (MRC)
The Rehabilitation Counselor Education (RCE) program offers a complete master's level curriculum to both on- and off-campus students. RCE is fully accredited by C.O.R.E. It reaches students across the United States, Canada, and in countries as far away as Germany and Singapore. Currently over 100 individuals are matriculated both on- and off-campus. The RCE program offers a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling. Courses are delivered using prepackaged multimedia materials, live internet classes, and standard phone technology. Most students complete this program in three years, and are required to attend three one-week spring classes on campus during the course of their studies. USU's master's degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling is ranked 12th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

On-Campus Doctoral

Doctoral Doctoral Program with Emphasis in Rehabilitation Counseling (PhD)

The general purpose of the Ph.D. program is to prepare leadership personnel for positions in research, teacher training, program development, policy making, and administration.

Completion of the program certifies competence in three areas with emphasis in rehabilitation counseling:

  • Mastery of theoretical and applied content required for providing appropriate education for people with disabilities.
  • Ability to conduct independent research with particular emphasis on techniques in the social sciences that are appropriate to special education.
  • Ability to teach audiences of varying sophistication and expertise and supervise the delivery of rehabilitation counseling services.
