Special Education Undergrad Programs:
Off Campus

The department offers a number of programs both on- and off-campus. All start with a core curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Different areas of emphasis are available at each level of study.

Alternative Teacher Preparation Program in Special Education for Provisionally Certified Teachers (Wasatch Front)

These programs offer special education licensing to work with students with mild/moderate and severe disabilities in the greater Salt Lake City area.  To be eligible for this program participants must have a bachelor's degree (a teaching degree is NOT required) from an accredited college or university and be employed in an approved special education setting serving students with mild/moderate or severe disabilities.  Preparation includes academic coursework taken concurrently with supervised field-based experiences. Applications are available in May for the following academic year and are due July 1st.

Early Childhood -- Alternative Teacher Preparation program

Utah State University in collaboration with the Utah State Office of Education offers a distance-education program leading to teaching licensure in Early Childhood Special Education (birth to age five). Courses are offered online and at EDNET facilities located throughout the state. To participate in this program, students must have a bachelor's degree (teaching degree and teaching licensure is not required). In addition, students must be employed by a Utah school district in a preschool special education classroom.

Early Childhood Sensory Impairment: Utah Multi-University Consortium Teacher Preparation Program (Utah & surrounding states)

This is a cooperative program between the University of Utah and USU. It is available statewide and in border areas of neighboring states. It provides coursework leading to a teaching credential necessary to serve infants, toddlers and preschoolers (birth to five years) who have vision or hearing impairments, and their families. Graduates will receive a Utah Early Childhood Special Education Certificate with an endorsement in vision or hearing for children aged 0-5. Students may also receive a B.S. or M.S. depending on their specific program arrangements. There is federal funding available for students. Course work and practica from existing programs are the basis for this program. Admission is based on the procedures and rules of USU and the U of U.

Special Education Licensure Program in Mild/Moderate Disabilities (Brigham City, Ogden/Davis, Salt Lake, Tooele, UVSC, Roosevelt, Vernal)

This program offers students coursework leading to a B.S. in Special Education with an endorsement in Mild/Moderate. Courses are delivered via the state EDNET system and the Internet with extensive use of the Internet for delivering course materials, readings, assignments, student feedback, and class projects. It also includes remote supervision of rural teachers via interactive audio-video technology. Some assistance for student tuition is available. This program is based on a two-year cohort group. The next group starts January 2007 and applications are due by October 1st, 2006.

Sensory Impairment Certification: Multi-University Consortium Program for Teachers of Students with Sensory Impairments (Utah)

This program is offered as part of a consortium between Utah State University and the University of Utah. It prepares teachers of students with visual or hearing impairments. Those completing the program receive certification in sensory impairments. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.
