Transfer Students

Students who plan well can complete their associates at an approved school and then complete the professional and special education courses at USU within four semesters. It would be wise to work closely with  while attending the transfer school to complete the appropriate courses.

How Do Students Apply to the Special Education Major?

  1. Students are admitted to USU as pre-special education majors.
  2. Students must apply to the Special Education Major.
  3. Special Education has one application date a year – October 10
  4. Students can apply to the Special Education Major on the web:
  5. The application will be posted on the web page beginning July 1
  6. The application for Special Education and Teacher Education are combined.
  7. Students need the following minimum criteria in order to apply

 

How Does a Student Complete the Special Education Major?

  • Apply to the Special Education Major by October 10
  • WHEN ACCEPTED, take the Professional Education Coursework Spring Semester (the professional education coursework must be completed before beginning the Special Education Major Classes)
  • Complete the Special Education Courses the following Fall and Spring Semester (These courses are only offered once per year.  Spring Semester courses build on what was taught during Fall semester.)
  • Complete student teaching during one semester after completing the SPED major coursework.
  • Complete graduation requirements including the teaching support area.

How can you get ready for the Special Education Program?

  • Complete the course requirements needed to apply to the SPED program
  • Complete a teaching support area while working on an Associates Degree at your institution
  • Teaching Support Requirement:  15 credits of coursework designed to improve or enhance the teaching degree.
  • Complete the following tests or requirements early:
    • Writing Exam
    • Speech and Hearing Test
    • Praxis Exam
    • Math Requirements
